Discover More About The Subaru XV
The Boxer engine sits low in the engine bay to help protect occupants by sliding below the cabin – not into it - in the event of a severe frontal collision.
Ring-shaped Passenger Safety Cell
The ring-shaped passenger cell is made from high tensile strength steel, which directs impact energy around the passenger compartment, not through it. The body frame has also been designed to minimize the effect of rear end collisions by evenly distributing the impact energy left and right through diagonal members to help reduce cabin distortion.
Whiplash Reduction Seats
The front seats feature the same whiplash injury reducing design as the Liberty. This design provides good support for the occupants’ head, neck and torso and provides a mechanism that allows controlled rearward movement in the event of a rear end collision. This allows the whiplash energy to be absorbed, helping to reduce the severity of whiplash injuries.
Seven SRS airbags2 including dual front, dual front side, curtain and a driver’s knee airbag are standard for the Subaru XV models. Airbags and sensors have been designed to reduce weight.
Vehicle Dynamics Control
Subaru’s electronic driver assist system, called Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC), features a range of stability and braking technologies which step in to help maintain safety in extreme situations. By automatically acting on information transmitted from a sophisticated array of sensors, the factors influencing the Subaru XV’s stability are constantly monitored to help the driver stay in control. Subaru Vehicle Dynamics Control incorporates:
- Electronic Stability Control (ESC)
- Traction Control System (TCS)
- TCS Limited Slip Device (LSD)
- Anti-lock Braking System (ABS)
- Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD)
- Brake Assist
Rear View Reverse Camera
Every Subaru XV features a rear view reverse camera as standard. The camera improves visibility when reversing and helps to reduce and avoid collisions with surrounding objects.
It all starts with the new third generation Boxer engine. The third generation Boxer engine is compact, lightweight and low in height and was designed with capacity to progressively meet the demands for improved environmental and driving performance for the next decade. Low speed torque especially at light throttle application has also been improved and this makes for a responsive and lively acceleration especially around town at low to medium speeds. Subaru XV has a maximum power output of 110kW @ 6200rpm and torque of 196Nm @ 4200rpm
Auto Stop Start
Auto Stop Start introduced for the first time in the Subaru range on Subaru XV further contributes to fuel efficiency by saving fuel normally consumed while the engine is idling when the vehicle is stationary in heavy traffic or at traffic lights.
The system has been designed to have no impact on the driving performance and to be a totally natural feeling to the driver once accustomed to the slightly different feeling of the engine not running shortly after coming to a stop. The system does not require any additional driver input, automatically stopping and restarting the engine in a fraction of a second.
The fuel savings obtained using this system obviously depend on the amount of stop start driving but in house testing during typical city rush hour traffic has shown that the engine is stopped for up to 20 per cent of the travel time. Actual fuel savings can be monitored using the Multi-Function Display that shows cumulative travel time, engine stop time and fuel saved (ml).
During Auto Stop Start operation, the interior fan, navigation and audio systems are all fed by the auxiliary power supply. Hill Start Assist ensures Auto Stop Start operates safely on hills. On steep hills, the engine will not automatically stop. To avoid wasting electrical energy, the car’s electric power steering is turned off whenever the engine is automatically stopped. In extreme conditions such as very hot days, the engine will continue idling if the air conditioning, combined with other systems demand power.
Together with the high performance Boxer engine, Subaru’s new fuel saving Auto Stop Start technology takes petrol engine efficiency to a new level while meeting EURO5 emission standards.
The newly optimised Lineartronic™ CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission), was designed to suit the new Boxer engine and chassis, and is equipped with a significantly wider gear ratio coverage range to deliver highly responsive acceleration, improved drivability and higher fuel efficiency. The six-speed manual Subaru XV transmission also delivers excellent fuel efficiency and smooth shift quality.
Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive
Combined with the horizontally-opposed Boxer engine, Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive delivers outstanding grip, balance and control in a variety of road conditions. Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive has the engine mounted in-line with the drivetrain, helping provide a seamless transfer of power to all four wheels. Having power distributed across all four wheels, rather than two on conventional vehicles, gives you twice the grip capacity. So under acceleration there’s more grip for cornering and more capacity to keep on track through the corners. Ultimately, having the driving force spread across all four wheels means greater control and confidence.
The traction and control delivered by SAWD is further enhanced by the Subaru XV’s suspension. The wide track front suspension produces more responsive steering and cornering, while the double wishbone rear suspension ensures a smooth, controlled ride with outstanding handling, comfort and quietness. For you, the driver, it all adds up to an agile and responsive vehicle with optimum balance, control and confidence in a variety of driving conditions.
Hill Start Assist
Hill Start Assist is one benefit of owing a 6-speed manual Subaru XV. Hill Start Assist momentarily applies the brakes when the driver performs a standing start on a hill. This allows for a smoother take off for those sticky off-road situations.
A class leading ground clearance of 220mm offers high riding and serious SUV ability. The 220mm high ground clearance is a benefit of the horizontally-opposed Boxer engine. Its light weight, compactness and low height results in a smaller engine bay – meaning more ground clearance and the ability to clamber over tougher terrain.
Vehicle Dynamics Control:
Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC) is designed to help maintain safety in extreme situations. Stability is important when you’re descending and climbing gradients. Subaru’s Vehicle Dynamics Control is a complete system of safety measures made up of stability and braking technologies. In extreme unusual circumstances - like when your tyre slips on slippery slope and you have to swerve or brake suddenly - VDC is there to help. When road conditions are particularly challenging, such as a muddy track, Subaru's VDC Traction Control System and Limited Slip Device kick in, to minimise wheel spin and transfer power from the wheels that slip to the wheels with grip.
